PROVENANCE
The Artist
“Robert Lindenaux was another artist painting at the same time as Charlie Russell. He was also a photographer and captured scenes of the West on old glass plates. I came upon one of his photographs at an estate sale of a rodeo in Cody, Wyoming, taken between the late 1800s- early 1900s. I was so taken by the photograph that I purchased it with the intention of turning it into a painting. But when I began painting the photograph, I improvised. And instead of painting the cowboy on the horse as in the photo, I painted an Indian brave on the horse instead. I did this because I believe the best cowboys were the Indians. The painting is a play on ‘cowboys and Indians,’ depicting a role reversal of the “cowboys” rodeo ground with the cowboy being an ‘Indian.’ I came up with the title after thinking how humorous it would be to hear a fast-talking auctioneer say it out loud, but of course also because the horse is bucking.” — Tom Gilleon, artist
